Our construction contractor, United Infrastructure (UI), has started operations at A41 Liverpool Road for a 'Special Section' of the Main Onshore Pipeline (the Pipeline).
A special section is defined as an area along the Pipeline surrounded by constraints such as roads, rivers or railway lines. In these areas, a small, highly skilled and self-sufficient crew will construct the Pipeline in one go.
These operations started the week commencing (w/c) 10 August 2026 and are due to complete in the w/c 23 November 2026 (subject to progress).
Initial special section works have involved setting up construction compounds, stripping topsoil and laying sections of the Pipeline so that it is ready for welding and coating.
Over the next few weeks, residents will likely see an increase of heavy machinery on-site as the UI construction team begins excavating pipe trenches and lowering sections of the Pipeline in the land between the A41 Liverpool Road and Chester-Birkenhead Railway.
From the w/c 19 October 2026, UI will begin excavating shafts on either side of A41 Liverpool Road to create safe entry and exit points for the auger bore operations. They also provide safe access for equipment installation, material excavation and ongoing monitoring.
Once these shafts are complete, the Pipeline will be installed under A41 Liverpool Road using the auger boring technique. These works will take place over four days between the w/c 2 November 2026 and w/c 9 November 2026 (subject to progress).
Once the Pipeline is firmly in the ground, the land will be restored as close as reasonably practicable to its original condition. The Pipeline will then undergo a series of testing and inspection procedures to ensure it is safe and ready to be brought into operation.
Auger boring will be undertaken by our specialist tunnelling subcontractor, Joseph Gallagher Limited (JGL). It is a trenchless tunnelling technique that will bury the Pipeline deep beneath the ground, ensuring minimal disruption to key infrastructure, transport routes and environmentally sensitive areas. This means the A41 Liverpool Road will remain fully operational during the works.
