Main Onshore Pipeline: Q10 Sampling of the existing gas pipeline

An update from our construction contractor on works along the existing section of the Main Onshore Pipeline
As part of the construction of the HyNet Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) Pipeline, also known as the Main Onshore Pipeline, the existing Point of Ayr to Flint gas pipeline will be repurposed.

Our Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor, United Infrastructure (UI), is set to start carrying out Q10 Material Sampling (Q10 sampling) on the existing 24-inch gas pipeline between Point of Ayr and the Flint Above Ground Installation (AGI).

Q10 sampling will help confirm the welding procedures needed before sections of the Main Onshore Pipeline (the Pipeline) are connected to the existing Point of Ayr to Flint gas pipeline.

Q10 Material sampling

Q10 sampling involves scraping a small sample of the existing gas Pipeline to confirm its chemical composition and material grade. This section of the Pipeline ceased operations for its previous use in 2024, with Q10 sampling being carried out externally and without breaking containment of the existing Pipeline.

The works will require UI to excavate a small area to access the Point of Ayr to Flint section of the Pipeline and form part of the standard preparations for connecting different sections of the Pipeline together.

As part of these works, residents may notice a small, controlled working area with specialist equipment and on-site personnel. The works will involve:
  • establishing the working area and mobilising equipment
  • excavating a small area to access the Pipeline
  • carrying out Q10 sampling
  • backfilling the excavation and reinstating the land to as close as reasonably practicable to its original condition.

Q10 sampling programme

UI will carry out Q10 sampling works at four locations along the existing gas pipeline, with these works planned at:

1. Flint AGI for approximately 12 days, starting the week commencing 19 October 2026 and ending the week commencing 26 October 2026 (subject to progress).

2. Pentre Halkyn Block Valve Station (BVS) for approximately 12 days, starting the week commencing 2 November 2026 and ending the week commencing 9 November 2026 (subject to progress).

3. Babell BVS for approximately 12 days, starting the week commencing 16 November 2026 and ending the week commencing 23 November 2026 (subject to progress).

4. Cornist Lane BVS for approximately 12 days, starting the week commencing 30 November 2026 and ending the week commencing 7 December 2026 (subject to progress).

All dates in the Q10 sampling programme are subject to progress. Further updates will be added to the latest news section of the HyNet Hub if there are any changes.
