Main Onshore Pipeline: Pre-enabling works for auger boring activities

Preparatory construction works to facilitate the Main Onshore Pipeline's programme are underway
United Infrastructure (UI), our Engineering, Procurement and Construction contractor, has started preparatory construction works to facilitate the Main Onshore Pipeline's (the Pipeline) auger boring programme.

Preparatory works include setting up construction compounds at locations along the Pipeline route and excavating 'reception' and 'launch' pits to the planned depth required to safely carry out the auger boring programme (formation level).

These pits will serve as entry and exit points for the auger boring operations, providing safe access for equipment installation, material excavation and ongoing monitoring.

Once complete, UI will hand over the site to its specialist auger bore subcontractor, Joseph Gallagher Limited (JGL), who will be responsible for undertaking the Pipeline's auger boring programme.

These preparatory construction works are due to start at:
  • Picton Lane, Chester on Monday, 23 February 2026
  • Chorlton Lane, Chester on Tuesday, 24 February 2026
  • Chester Road, Sandycroft on Monday, 02 March 2026
  • Thornton Green Lane, Thornton-le-Moors on Tuesday, 03 March 2026

What is auger boring?

Auger boring is a trenchless tunnelling technique that installs the Pipeline under the ground by pushing a steel casing or tube through the soil while a rotating helical auger (spiral tool) brings the soil out of the casing.

Further updates about the Pipeline's auger boring programme will be added onto the HyNet Hub Latest News section in advance of works starting.
