Health and safety

The UK is home to a range of high-hazard industries and has developed a world-class safety regulatory regime. The UK Government regulates all carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology projects, its infrastructure and its operation. The safety of the Point of Ayr (PoA) Cable Route Foreshore Works will be regulated by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA). Both regulatory bodies have a long track record of effectively regulating safety in the UK hydrocarbon sector.

During construction, we will take all precautions to keep everyone safe. LBCCS is committed to ensuring the highest safety standards across all aspects of our operations. LBCCS and our principal contractor, Boskalis, have extensive experience designing, building, and operating safe and effective industrial infrastructure projects. Combined, we will use this expertise to deliver the PoA Cable Route Foreshore Works to the highest safety standards.

There will be a limited potential of accidents as no unusual or complex activities are proposed and only a small number of plant and equipment will be used. There will be barriers around our temporary work areas and appropriate security in place. If we encounter any unforeseen materials, we will remove and safely dispose of them.

The construction will be carried out under the Construction Design and Management (CDM) Regulations, 2015, to ensure the highest health and safety procedures implemented during the construction phase.

During operation, there are no residual risks to or from the cable. A Cable Specification and Installation Plan (CSIP), which demonstrates cable burial to the required depth to avoid hazards and risks, will be developed. To minimise potential impact from the cables and snagging of cables, a commitment to bury cables has been made in accordance with the specific policies set out in the Northwest Inshore and North West Offshore Coast Marine Plans (MMO, 2021).
